What this series is about
This series is about my quest for a sub 2 hour half marathon, which might sound ridiculous considering there are people going for sub 2 marathons! However, this goal is tailored to me and I think its achievable but definitely not easy.
My half marathon experience
I’ve run two half marathons before but I had to write off the times for both of them. The first went fine, but I wanted to wait for my family to run in together so I waited at the 12 mile marker for a while. The second half marathon was a bad one for me. I had injuries throughout training but stupidly still ran and it wasn’t a pleasant experience. I was fine up until about 7 miles and then it was agony and I was hobbling until the end. I need to make sure that this doesn’t happen again and I feel like my mum would never forgive me if I make her worry like that again!
Challenges I’ll face
This won’t be easy for me and there are a few challenges that I’ll face along the way. The first of them being time and energy. I’m currently going to the gym at least 5 times a week which doesn’t leave much time to train for races. I also mentioned energy because training legs twice a week does effect my running. Today is a perfect example because I planned to do a 10k, but I could only do 4 miles due to saving my legs for the gym (can’t afford to skip leg day). In theory, I should have planned better and not been on a run on leg day, but it had to be done today. Something else I have to be cautious of is avoiding injury. Due to my previous injuries, I need to make sure that I don’t over train and do myself any damage. I basically just need to be sensible about it. There will be lots of other challenges along the way and I’ll talk through them as they happen but nothing will stop me getting a sub 2 hour half marathon.
My plans for achieving the goal
I know for certain that I’m running a half marathon in October but I want to do other half’s before that. Training will be a bit of an experiment for me because it’s been over a year since running 13 miles. I’ve been doing a few 10k’s recently so I plan to just slowly increase the distance and monitor my progress. I also want to run with some other people to make the training more fun and hopefully I’d learn some things along the way.
